Below you can read about the research we conduct into gender representation in film and the wider industry, tracking the release landscape to present an accurate picture of investment in films by filmmakers of marginalised genders.

FADIA’S TREE

Dreaming of a homeland she is denied, a Palestinian refugee stranded in Lebanon sets a challenge to the director to find an ancient mulberry tree that stands as witness to her family’s existence.

While millions of birds migrate freely in the skies, a Palestinian woman in a refugee camp in Lebanon yearns for the ancestral homeland she’s denied. She sets a challenge to the director to find an ancient tree that stands as witness to her family’s existence – with only inherited memories, a sightless man and a two-headed dragon as guides.

This story of a 15-year friendship that stays connected across a divided land and a fragmented people, adopts a bird’s eye perspective to reflect on freedom of movement, exile and the hope of return.

We would like to invite a written response to REBEL DYKES (directed by Harri Shanahan & Sian A. Williams) from an early career Scotland-based film writer / curator / critic / poet.

Your article will be a reflexive and creative response to the film, or take the form of an opinion piece, ideally incorporating a short review. We’re looking for fresh perspectives on the film and the lead subjects from those with lived experience within the LGBTQI+ community of any age. NB. Although we don’t want to sanctify the work, we are supporting Rebel Dykes.

REBEL DYKES: is a rabble-rousing documentary set in 1980s post-punk London, UK. The unheard story of a community of dykes who met doing art, music, politics and sex, and how they went on to change their world.

Now in its 18th year, BIRDS’ EYE VIEW continues to spotlight, celebrate and create impact for films by women and non-binary people while building a community for those who make, show, release and watch them.
