To celebrate Yoko Ono’s birthday, here’s Devorah Baum talking about her 1966 film BOTTOM

Yoko Ono Lennon is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and peace activist. Her work also encompasses performance art, which she performs in both English and Japanese, and filmmaking. In May 2017 after a 50 year ban the Royal Albert Hall opened its doors to Yoko Ono’s 1966 film Bottoms (or Film No. 4) which consists of nothing but close-up shots of 365 naked rears, walking away from the camera. Its “stars”, cast from an advert placed in an underground newspaper, included Richard Hamilton, the father of Pop Art, who designed the Beatles’ “White Album” cover. Birds Eye View invited Devorah Baum to talk about the film and other philosophical fundamentals. Devorah Baum is associate professor in English literature at the University of Southampton. She is the author of Feeling Jewish (A Book for Just About Anyone) and The Jewish Joke, and co-director of the documentary feature film The New Man.
