MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 18-24 May: One film a day chosen by writer/director Deborah Haywood

NANCY
Written & directed by Christina Choe
“Riseborough shines in engaging psychodrama”.  Peter Bradshaw. The Guardian ” The impacted passions and disturbing aftershocks of Choe’s story- even though distilled to familiar tropes—nonetheless place “Nancy” far ahead of most acclaimed movies in theatres now”. The New Yorker We asked one of our favourite filmmakers, Deborah Haywood to pick one film a day in response to Mental Health Awareness Week (18-24 May); the theme of which is “kindness.” Day seven and Haywood’s final selection is Christina Choe’s, feature film debut, Nancy – a psychodrama starring Andrea Riseborough, J. Smith-Cameron, Ann Dowd, John Leguizamo, and Steve Buscemi. It had its world premiere in the US Dramatic Competition at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where Choe was awarded the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.
Here’s Haywood explaining why she chose this stunning debut. “NANCY is the final pick and what a film! Who would have thought that kindness could be the main ingredient that adds the tension to a film? But it is here – as is the mental (fragile) health of both the protagonist and the other main characters, Nancy’s ‘potential’ mum and dad. Mum is willing to shower Nancy with kindness, and Nancy is desperate for it. And dad, who isn’t convinced Nancy’s who she says she is, is so kind to his wife that we understand him, and we’re thankful.  xxx” CLICK HERE TO SEE WHERE TO WATCH NANCY Watch Christina Choe’s  2011 short film I AM JOHN WAYNE winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival and screened at dozens of festivals around the world. # MentalHealthAwarenessWeek @mentalhealth #KindnessMatters #filmonomicsplus #IndustryInsights
