I am not a witch: preview screening and Q&A
On October 18 this surreal, sharply satirical, boldly provocative debut feature is followed by a Q&A with Zambian-born Welsh director Rungano Nyoni and Birds Eye View’s Mia Bays. Following a banal incident in her local village in Zambia, nine-year-old Shula is accused of witchcraft. After a short trial she is found guilty, taken into state custody and exiled to a witch camp in the middle of the desert. Like the other residents, Shula is tied to a ribbon which is attached to a spool that sits in a large tree. She is told that should she ever cut the ribbon, she’ll be cursed and transformed into a goat. But as Shula adjusts to her new way of life, she discovers freedoms she never had access to before.
Garnering incredible praise from both audiences and critics at Cannes 2017, this moving and funny film is an astonishing debut from a fresh and fearless new voice in British cinema. This film has been supported by Cannes’ Cinefondation Residency.
