FIVE FILMS: Tricky Romance
Birds’ Eye View’s Jordan Kaltz has picked five Films that explore the complexities and taboos of love and romantic relationships: from relationships being put through the wringer, to new loves born out of strange and sometimes dangerous situations. In the history of cinema, when dealing with stories of sexual encounters, male filmmakers have repeatedly fetishized and dehumanised female characters in the process. In this selection of films, women tell women’s stories, devoid of the male gaze. That being said, none of these films shy away from the complicated reality of illicit love and the difficulties that sometimes end in a stronger bond and other times end on more grizzly terms. HERE’S WHERE TO WATCH THEM Let the Sunshine In (Claire Denis, 2017) Variety (Bette Gordon, 1983) Amour Fou (Jessica Hausner, 2014) Snow Canon (Mati Diop, 2011) Thou Wast Mild and Lovely (Josephine Decker, 2014) #filmonomicsplus #IndustryInsights
