Day 7. BIRDS EYE VIEW X PRIDE. CURATOR, JO REID – THE SPACES WE CREATE. JUPITER ASCENDING, Dir

DAY 7 JUPITER ASCENDING (2015) Dir. Lilly Wachowski, Lana Wachowski  2 hours 7 minutes Available on Amazon Prime Video [CC and AD available]  Trailer Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), an ordinary housekeeper, discovers she is actually heir to a vast Space empire that wants to destroy Earth. The Wachowski Sisters have consistently throughout their careers created spaces for queer stories to be told within genre films, from the universal, pansexual queerness of Sense8 to the sub-textual trans liberation found within The Matrix. However, for this season I have picked their less critically and commercially successful space opera, Jupiter Ascending. A melodramatic space spectacle dripping with sincerity and silliness, this film is unabashedly feminine and queer in a genre often dominated by heterosexual masculinity.  Although lambasted by critics, Jupiter Ascending has found love from its fans, who celebrate the emphasis on aesthetics, big emotions, and Eddie Redmayne’s weird acting choices.
