Directed by US film student Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, Needle scooped the prestigious Cinefoundation Prize at Cannes. Praised for its “beautiful precision” by jury president Jane Campion, this acutely observed 20-minute drama portrays the parental fall-out from a girl’s desire to get her ears pierced.

A father’s death is the inciting incident for Zakaria, helmed by Leyla Bouzid. Zak leads a quiet village life in Southern France. Bereavement prompts him to take his family back to Algeria, causing all manner of ructions.
