One of the highlights of BEV 2014 is our International Shorts programme at BFI Southbank, which offers a chance to see work by some of the brightest new stars in global cinema on the big screen. Manish Agarwal tells you a little bit about them:

This year’s selection ranges from unknown gems to a pair of festival circuit award winners. Directed by US film student Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, Needle scooped the prestigious Cinefoundation Prize at Cannes. Praised for its “beautiful precision” by jury president Jane Campion, this acutely observed 20-minute drama portrays the parental fall-out from a girl’s desire to get her ears pierced.

There are further complications in The Cut, a lovely vignette by French-Canadian writer-director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles, which won the Short Film Jury Award for International Fiction at Sundance in January. A sparky youngster prepares to trim her dad’s hair, but things don’t go quite to plan.

A father’s death is the inciting incident for Zakaria, helmed by Leyla Bouzid. Zak leads a quiet village life in Southern France. Bereavement prompts him to take his family back to Algeria, causing all manner of ructions.

Boles is an ingenious work of lovelorn stop-motion magic by Slovenia-based animator Špela Čadež. Based on Maxim Gorky’s short story Her Lover, it explores the age-old nexus between creativity and loneliness using surreal wit and wobbly-fingered puppets. Puppets yo!

Multi-talented New Yorker Emily Carmichael’s riotously inventive and painfully funny animation RPG OKC shows us what happens when the romantic Russian roulette that is internet dating meets the pixel-tastic world of fantasy video games. It brought the house down when screened ahead of the Birds Eye View International Women’s Day Gala last month: be sure to catch this encore presentation!
