Writer-director Shuchi Talati’s feature debut, “Girls Will Be Girls,” is a profoundly moving document of generational girlhood. In a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayas, 16-year-old Mira discovers desire and romance; but her sexual, rebellious awakening is disrupted by her mother, who never got to come of age herself.
As she wrestles with new desires and ample curiosity inspired by the handsome Sri, Mira finds herself at odds with the school’s rules and her mother’s incessant involvement in her new romance. As she strives to escape the watchful eyes of her teachers, mother, and classmates to find time alone with Sri, Mira approaches learning about love with the same dedication she brings to her studies, blurring the line between innocence and curiosity.
