Suffragette (2015)

Directed by Sarah Gavron

Based on true events about the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement who were forced underground to evade the State.

In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan). Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause.

Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU)

The militant wing of the British woman suffrage movement. WSPU was founded in Manchester in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst. Along with the more conservative National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), founded in 1897, the WSPU sought votes for women in a country that had expressly denied women suffrage in 1832.

Emmeline Pankhurst, née Emmeline Goulden, (July 14 1858- June 14, 1928), militant champion of woman suffrage whose 40-year campaign achieved complete success in the year of her death, when British women obtained full equality in the voting franchise. Her daughter Christabel Harriette Pankhurst also was prominent in the woman suffrage movement.
